How to Travel to St. John USVI
Traveling to the Island of St. John isn’t as simple as hopping on a plane and arriving in paradise…it takes a little bit more than that but is very worth it! Here I’m going to tell you how to get to the Island of St. John USVI.
I just got home from an amazing week on the Island of St. John. For some, this travel day might be intimidating but believe me it’s not as bad as it sounds. Once you are in paradise the travel day is totally worth it!
Before my trip, I did a lot of research about how to get there and learned a lot while traveling. Here I am going to break down how to get to St. John, let’s get into it!
How to Travel to St. John USVI:
I just traveled to St. John from Boston, MA and stayed in Coral Bay. This is how my full travel day went:
- Got a ride to the airport (about 1 hour from my house)
- Flight BOS – JFK (45 min)
- Flight JFK – STT (4 hours)
- Taxi ride across St. Thomas to the ferry dock (about 30 min)
- Ferry ride from St. Thomas to St. John (about 20 min)
- Taxi ride from the ferry dock to Airbnb in Coral bay (about 30 min)
Flights:
St. John doesn’t have its own airport so you have to fly into St. Thomas which is very close by.
The prices of flights to STT are not bad! My family (4 people) just flew to STT early/mid January and it was about $500 per person on Delta roundtrip. We only bought our tickets about a month before our trip.
A lot of airlines fly into St. Thomas, the airport was bigger than I expected for an Island.
Tip: Go on private browsing mode on Google and search flights from (your city) to St. Thomas and find the cheapest flight. Then go directly to the airline’s site and buy you ticket through them to save money and avoid any issues!
Taxi ride from St. Thomas Airport to Red Hook Ferry Dock:
When you get off your flight you will see the baggage claim area and shortly after you head outside where there are lots of taxis waiting. If you have to pick up your luggage, have someone do so then someone else go and secure a taxi. If not, head straight over to the taxis! This part can get a little bit chaotic since so many people are trying to do the same thing.
The majority of the taxis are shared buses that fit about 10 people. We didn’t realize this until other people started getting into the same van as us and before we knew it, it was packed full.
The downside of this is you will most likely have to make a few stops on the way to the ferry dock which makes you ride a little longer. The upside is it’s cheaper since you are sharing it with so many others. The cost is usually about $25 per person plus tip.
Next time we plan on setting up a private taxi with Paradise Taxi.
Red Hook Ferry:
Arrive at the ferry, there will be a building you have to first go into and purchase your ferry ticket to Cruz Bay! You need to have cash ready to purchase your ferry ticket. It will cost you about $16 for one person plus one roller luggage.
When you get on, you give your roller luggage to the crew and they will store it until you arrive on St. John.
The ferry runs every hour on the hour 6am-11pm. There is lots of room to find your own space to sit. Indoor or outdoor, I recommend going upstairs and towards the front!
When you arrive on the Island of St. John the ferry empties out quickly and the crew takes everyones luggage off.
The ferry was my favorite part of the travel day! The fresh island air and views were just what we needed!
Taxi ride to hotel, airbnb or rental car on St. John:
Arrive at Cruz Bay and get your bags, you have made it to the Island!
When you get off the dock, you will see all kinds of taxi trucks lined up to the left. If you don’t have a ride setup they are a good option.
Know before you go, if you are staying in Coral Bay (about 35 minutes away) a lot of the taxi drivers won’t want to go all the way over. Ask your airbnb host or hotel if they have any driver they can connect you with.
I highly recommend Fergie, he is very nice and will take you to where you want to go!
Now, if you are staying in Cruz Bay you can just walk to your airbnb or hotel. Also if you rent a Jeep out of Cruz Bay you can just walk over to the rental shop. Everything is very close and you see a lot of people walking around with their luggage.
If you arrive to the Island before you can check into where you are staying, go to High Tide. A restaurant right next to the dock! They will let you tuck your luggage aside, grab some food and a drink until your place is ready.
Did you decide to rent a Jeep? Just remember to keep left! Don’t stress about the driving, you will get the hang of it quickly.
Travel day tips:
- Bring cash with you, don’t rely on the ATMs on the island
- You need cash to pay + tip the taxi drivers and for your ferry tickets
- Give yourself a little extra time between flights, taxis and ferries incase something runs late
- Book your taxi drivers ahead of time and text them with updates if anything changes. It’s so nice to have someone waiting for you who knows exactly where you need to go
- Have you hotel or airbnb address written down
- When you arrive on the Island it is HOT wear layers that you can take off if you are coming from somewhere cold
Enjoy yourself while on the beautiful Island of St. John!!
Your travel days will go by faster than you think. Especially on the way there, before you know it you will be in paradise!
When you are on that ferry pulling up to St. John, it’ll all be so worth it!

We have travelled all over the Caribbean but sadly have never made it to the USVI. Good to know that to get to St Johns requires a little effort. But also to know it is worth the effort. Good idea to rent a jeep once you get to St Johns.

Gosh what a beatuiful island. You’ve laid out a lot of great options here for getting to St. John. I hope to follow your recommendations some day and make my way to this beautiful destination.

Having never been to the Americas (yet!), it’s really inspiring to read about such beautiful places other than the usual. I’ve got quite a list for when I do visit and I’ll be adding the USVI to that list. It’s good to know these options of getting there. Thanks.
