Clothes

The #1 thing you will be wearing 99% of the time is a bathing suit–be sure to pack plenty of them! My go-to outfit from morning until after we watched the sunset on the beach was a bikini and a sarong. My boyfriend’s was his bathing suit and a tank top- it’s hot here! You want to wear light, comfortable clothes whenever you are not in the water.

Bring athletic clothes in case you want to go on any hikes, do yoga, or workout- I would bring a few options just to be safe! Bring a pair of leggings or flowy pants in case you want to go horseback riding! They require you to wear pants for this.

Santa Teresa is a surf town, you will not see people dressing to the nines like you would in other tropical destinations. It’s much more laid back here which we really liked. At dinner I often wore linen shorts and a tank top with my beachy hair and a headband.

  • Bathing suits
  • Beach coverups
  • Rash guard
  • Sarongs
  • Sundresses/skirt
  • Athletic shorts
  • Sweater
  • Tank Tops
  • Leggings
  • Flowy pants
  • Casual shorts
  • Casual tops
  • PJs
  • Bras
  • Socks
  • Sports bra

For reference, this was the most dressed up we got (We were both wearing our Rainbows as well) 👇🏻

Shoes

Alby and I were in our Rainbow flip flops the majority of our time in Santa Teresa. Rainbows are my go-to flip flop but are not the best option for Santa Teresa, you want something of plastic material that washes off and dries easily. You will end up walking through some mud, at least once and you want a shoe that can be cleaned easily.

Depending on the types of adventures you are doing will depend on the other shoes you want to bring. We wore our Tevas to hike, explore the tide pools and waterfalls- they worked perfectly!

We also brought sneakers (the shoes we traveled in). We only wore them on our travel days and on our horseback riding adventure because closed-toed shoes were required.

  • Flip Flops or Birkenstocks (make sure you get something that’s plastic material)
  • Tevas
  • Sneakers

Electronics

Bring a camera! There is so much beauty to be captured here…

  • Drone (DJI Mini 3 Pro)
  • 35mm Film Camera
  • DSLR Camera
  • GoPro
  • Chargers
  • Batteries
  • Extra film (Porta 400 is my favorite!)
  • Tripod

Toiletries

Be sure to only bring reef safe sunscreen with you to Santa Teresa!  You want to wear sunscreen that isn’t harmful to the ocean. Try and bring a few things of sunscreen with you if possible, it’s pretty expensive to buy in Santa Teresa

People warned us about the bugs in Costa Rica but we never had a problem with them or even needed it at all.

  • Reef safe sunscreen! Here are some I really like: Sea & Summit, Bare Republic & Badger
  • Makeup
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Body wash
  • Face wipes/ face wash
  • Lotion
  • Moisturizer
  • Razor
  • Lufa
  • Mini first aid kit
  • Deodorant
  • Headbands
  • Hair products

What size suitcase should you bring to Santa Teresa?

A carry-on bag! Believe me it’s all you need! Like I said, you will be in your bathing suit 99% of the time and you can wash those every night. Both places we stayed had laundry services. We did a load of laundry once around day 5 or 6 of our 10 day trip and it worked out great for us. We were able to wash our airport outfit for the way home; I wore leggings, t-shirt, light fleece coat, and sneakers.

I used my Thule Chasm 40 L Duffel Bag and Alby used a traditional roller carry-on bag. We also both brought a backpack as our personal item.

For all of the travel you will need to do to get to and from Santa Teresa, having just a carry-on bag and a backpack is the way to go. You don’t want to be lugging around a huge suitcase.

Do you feel prepared?

I hope you are getting excited!! I love when it’s time to start planning what I need to pack for a trip because that means it’s very close!

Just remember to keep it simple for your trip to Santa Teresa! Think low-key surf town in Costa Rica! Pack for that vibe and remember you can re-wear outfits.

I hope this list has been helpful for you! We did lots of adventuring on our trip to Santa Teresa and this list is everything we brought. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments below, I would love to hear from you!
