How to Pack for Travel: Tips and Tricks
Here is my pre-trip travel guide, How to Pack for Travel: Tips and Tricks!
Packing…the part you either love or hate about traveling.
Learn to love it and make it a fun part of travel…it’s way better than stressing about it!
When it’s time to pack you know your trip is getting really close and that excitement moves to a whole new level! Packing well is a skill that requires patience and usually happens late at night or very last minute.
Overpacking can be annoying and a pain when you realize how much extra stuff you are lugging around once you’ve already left…and underpacking is the worst! When you arrive at a new destination and realize you definitely didn’t pack enough or bring everything you need. It will always depend on the type of trip you are going on to decide how much you need to pack and if you are going the carry-on or checked bag route.
Here are some of my personal packing tips I always try to follow:
How to Pack for Travel: Tips and Tricks:
Tips & Tricks:
- Try on your outfits before you pack them. Make sure you pack something you feel comfortable in, not just something you assume looks good on you in your head.
- Plan out outfits for each day- try on outfits and bring enough options for each day you will be gone with maybe 1 or 2 extra. This way you will be confident in what you brought and will avoid packing too many extra clothes that don’t even work with anything.
- Pack bottoms that will work with a few different tops you bring that way you can re-wear some stuff to save room in your bag.
- Consider bringing just a carry-on bag! Depending on how long you are going for this might be all you need. You can fit a lot of clothes in a carry-on and you will still have a personal item to bring that you can put a pair of shoes or toiletries in. Taking only a carry-on will also save you money since you won’t have to check a bag.
- If the airline offers to check your carry-on for free because the overhead bins are expected to be full do it! This will make your life easier when getting on and trying to find an overhead bin when they are almost full. Your bag will most likely be one of the first at baggage claim when you get off which is nice.
Tips & Tricks:
- If you check a bag and you are worried about losing it in transit, buy an Apple Airtag and put it in your bag. This way if the airline does lose it you can show them where it is. You can assist them to track your bag down faster.
- When you pack, be aware of the weight of your bag. Avoid overpacking your checked bag so you won’t get charged extra.
- Use packing cubes! They work so well and make packing very easy. Get one for bathing suits, shorts, tops, pjs, undies, bras and socks. Doing this keeps your suitcase so organized and easy to find whatever you need!
- Use travel compression bags, this will help you pack down bulky items like jeans. Pack these first and always put them on the bottom of your bag then pack everything else over it.
- Use the rolling technique on thin items like tank-tops. You can get these rolled so tiny and fit a bunch of them in a packing cube. This will save you so much space in your luggage.
Tips & Tricks:
- Always use ziplock baggies for liquid toiletry products! It’s the WORST when one leaks all over everything else.
- Pack PJs you don’t care about too much. Do this incase you go shopping on vacation and need some more room in your bag. You can leave behind those PJs to make room for your new purchases.
- If you are going to bring a hat (that isn’t a beanie) wear it on your travel days to save room.
- For your personal item(s)- bring a backpack or tote and then also a crossbody purse or fanny pack for your smaller (more important) items. Just leave a little bit of room in the larger bag so you can put the smaller one into it incase anyone gives you a hard time about having two personal items. I like to do this to have my wallet, IDs, cellphone, and cash close by and easily accessible.
These are the rules I make myself follow wherever I travel and always feel prepared. They are my best packing for travel tips and tricks and I think they work great!
Get in the hang of packing with these techniques and before you know it packing will be fun for you!
