Top 10 Proven Tips for Epic Ski Season Car Camping
Car camping is one of my favorite ways to save money on accommodations during ski season! You can sleep in some of the most prime locations for literally $0, there are just a few things you want to know before you do it!
I have a Subaru Forester that my boyfriend and I always use for our car camping adventures. We are tall people and the Forester fits us both perfectly, the most cozy little hotel room! Any SUV, Truck with a cap over the bed and even some smaller cars (depending on the size) will work for car camping! Here are my 10 tips you want to know before you go for the first time!
Top 10 Proven Tips for Epic Ski Season Car Camping
Car camping during ski season can be a fantastic way to enjoy the slopes while saving on accommodation costs. To ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience, here are 10 tips for car camping during ski season, each explained in more detail:
1. Window insulation
One of the most crucial aspects of staying warm during car camping in cold weather is proper window insulation. You can achieve this by covering all the windows in your vehicle. Go to your local Home Depot and pick up some Double Reflective Insulation. Trace out all the windows of your car and cut them out to fit! This takes about an hour and you will have these window coverings for years to come. I like to cut them a tiny bit larger than the window that way you can stuff the edges in without having to use any tape. We always bring a roll of painter’s tape just in case any don’t want to stay in.
2. Sleeping bags
Invest in high-quality sleeping bags suitable for cold weather. These are essential to keep you warm and comfortable throughout the night. Consider the temperature ratings of your sleeping bags, ensuring they are designed for the chilly conditions you’ll encounter during the ski season. Also it doesn’t hurt to always bring a few extra blankets to make your car extra cozy!
3. Roof box storage
Make the most of your car’s roof space by adding a roof box for extra storage. This is especially valuable when you have skiing gear and luggage to transport. It keeps your vehicle’s interior clutter-free and allows you to bring all the essentials. We use a Thule roof box and it fits our skis, bags, poles, boots and anything extra we bring. This is essential to keep your car open as your place to sleep!
4. Crack your windows
To avoid condensation and ensure proper ventilation, crack your windows slightly. This helps regulate humidity levels inside your car and prevents the windows from fogging up, which can make for a more comfortable and condensation-free night’s sleep. We usually crack the driver’s side and passenger side windows about an inch.
5. Don’t go alone- Body Heat!
If possible, car camp with a partner. Body heat generated by multiple people can significantly improve the interior temperature of your car. Sharing body heat will help keep everyone warm, even on the coldest nights. Believe me, having someone next to you to cuddle is what you want on the cold, cold nights!
6. Choose the right parking spot
Choosing the right parking spot is crucial for a comfortable car camping experience. Opt for designated campsites or safe parking areas near ski resorts. Ensure that you are allowed to park overnight, and be mindful of local regulations. Check the ski resorts rules on this before you go. Almost all ski resorts allow this, they just want you to follow their rules and park in their designated area. If they don’t allow it, look for a nearby Walmart to park at.
Sugarloaf and Killington are some of my favorite resorts to car camp at during ski season!
7. Check weather before you go- under 1 degree (too cold)
Always check the weather forecast before embarking on your car camping adventure. Camping in extremely cold conditions, especially below 1 degree Celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit), can be challenging and potentially dangerous. Be prepared for the weather you’ll encounter. We car camping on a -7 degree night and it just wasn’t fun. We were fully prepared but still could not stay warm all night long, we both woke up countless times due to how cold it was.
8. Hot water in a Nalgene
A Nalgene Bottle filled with hot water can serve as a makeshift heater inside your sleeping bag. Place it at your feet or in a pocket to help keep you warm throughout the night. Just make sure the bottle is securely sealed to prevent any leaks. Bring along a JetBoil to create hot water right before bed! This is one of the best ways to warm up without having to even turn the car on.
9. Hat, mittens, layers!
Dress in warm, moisture-wicking layers and don’t forget a good hat and mittens. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing as needed to maintain the right level of warmth. A hat and mittens are crucial for retaining heat in your extremities. We always bundle up and then take layers off if needed.
10. Air Mattress, sleeping pads, something!
Ensure your sleeping surface is comfortable and insulated from the cold. An air mattress or sleeping pad can make a world of difference in providing a buffer between you and the cold car surface. You will also be a lot more comfortable, be sure you have something to lay on! We use this air mattress that fits perfectly to my Subaru Forester. It’s durable, staying full of air all weekend long and is very comfy!
Tip: setup your bed at home before you leave! Blow up your air mattress, get your sleeping bags, pillows and blankets all setup so when its time for bed all you have to do is crawl in. Nobody wants to setup in the dark and freezing cold!
By following these 10 tips, you can maximize your enjoyment of car camping during the ski season, staying warm, cozy, and ready to hit the slopes at a moment’s notice. Car camping not only saves you money but also allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the great outdoors while enjoying winter sports.
